Soul is the primary unit of every living being and the way this soul interacts with the environment around us determines the actions and inactions of the human mind. One might think that their action are a result of the impulses of the mind. However, one must understand that there is something far more fundamental than the human mind which determines the action and inactions of the humans. It is the kashay, around a soul. In Jain Philosophy, the soul has been defined to be the purest in its pristine form emitting the most positive vibrations, which have to cross the region of kashay. Kashay is formed by the inauspicious karma formed by Anger, Ego, Deceit and Greed. So, the pure conscious energy has to pass through the impure kashay, thereby entering adhyavasy a state of where consciousness and body can be understood separately.
For one to understand the intrinsic science of behavioral studies and the cause-effect relations of the human emotions, it will be interesting to get an insight into the concepts of kashay, and its four contributing reasons, i.e. Anger, Ego, Deceit and Greed. An in detail reading of the book will give answers to the following queries:
The very element of kashay, which we comes across is anger. It can be self-driven, influenced by others, a mixture of the two or an inherent instinct upon which no external or internal factor has any control. Whatever may be the reason behind the cause of anger, it will always be channeled through the body and even the best of the monks and rishis have fallen pray to this emotion of anger. Now what actually sets apart the anger amongst different people is the extent till which the anger lasts. It has been described in the book that higher the mediational powers of the person, the lesser will the extent of this anger. Anger will come indeed but will also vanish in seconds, leaving no signs of its existence and whereas in someone of the opposite nature will be ridden with the weight of this anger for days and sometimes even weeks and months, causing its effect on their physical health, mental health and even the surroundings around them will be disturbed because of this.
The book does devise some simple methods to help one get control over this emotion of anger, in ways like being diet conscious by following a sattvic diet and avoiding the junk, unhealthy and unnecessary food items in order to relieve the body of the internal causes of the anger. This can be followed by the practice of meditation like deep breathing practice, white color meditation and the method of khechari mudra. Khechari Mudra is the practice in which the practitioner either presses the tongue between the teeth and twists the tongue inside the mouth, touching it to the upper palate and the breathe. The logic being quite simple and amazing behind this practice that our tongues which the only reason behind the birth of anger in the first place, shall be at rest and cause a reduction in the fickleness, leading to development of concentration. Another long-term solution advised is to merely avoid the causes of the anger. If the anger is caused by an object, avoid to be near it. If the anger is caused by a person, simply avoid talking to them. Being silent in a situation which provokes the anger, is by far the best solution to avoid a sudden outbreak of anger.
The presence of ego even has its own symptoms. A person stupefied with ego only looks upwards and never down. He never accepts the positivity’s of others and drawbacks of his own. Such is the charisma of ego that a person inflicted by it boasts that God comes to visit him. Now, even ego can be self inflicted, caused by actions of others, a mixture of the two or might be an inherent ego which upon which no external or internal factor has any control. It is also interesting to note that if we say that ego is the crude form, then self-respect is the refined form of the crude which is ego. In the spiritual aspect of life, both the crude and refined form have no space for existence. If one needs to flaunt their dignity, prosperity or pride, he is still attached to the material world and its perils.
A test of an egoistic behavior can be to simply test the way the person reacts to something new. An egoistic person is always in the notion that their thoughts are final and true thoughts, far away being receptive to new principles. However, a humble person is receptive and tolerant. He has the capacity to listen, contemplate and absorb the environment around him. This test is even applicable to the way the person shows respect to others. A donor who donates with respect to the recipient is a true donor, whereas a person who donates just for the sake donating is nothing but an egoistic person. It is one of the greatest virtues of non-violence, to be respectful towards others and respect each other’s opinions, a sign of humility and non-violence. The treatment of ego is a also a humongous task because the hindering elements in the treatment will be the insistence showcased by an egoistic person. The person is insistent on being right that they will fail to even consider the perspective of the other person and thereby become a hinderance in the treatment themselves. A multisided view of a perspective is what an egoistic person lags the most.
The first precaution which one must practice in their treatment of ego is to be aware of the fact that everything is temporal. Whatever might be the reason behind someone’s pride or ego, it is very necessary for them to understand that in the World everything has an ending and so will their reason of pride meet an end one day, then what use shall be left of the ego? The second precaution is to understand that everything is transient. Things change and change is the sole truth of this World. Then why do humans take such a great pride in things which are temporal and transient? Perhaps a question which we all must answer some day.
Deceit is the by product of pride and greed. A pride grows so does deceit and as greed grows so does deceit. Deceit is such an emotion that unlike others, it neither has any aggravation nor inertia, but it is hidden amongst other emotions like a thorn. It stays inside and does not even want to come outside like a wound which spreads and works inside. It is the entire of opposite of straightforwardness. It has been said the one who is simple and honest is pure and one who is pure can become an abode for religion. It is true that deceit does work in situations where the security of the nation and economic security, but it is in the areas of mutual relationships and religion where deceitful behavior should never be practiced. If two brothers work together and one becomes manipulative, mutual distrust will grow and when people start hiding things and deceive on another, a disaster is on its way to put an end to the sweetness of the relationship, mutual trust, love and friendship.
Deceit has no place in exploration of truth. One who has set out his path in exploration of truth, there can be no concealment of any kind and for this he must also rise above the requirements of practicality and manipulation. It is the transparency which one achieves that leads them to become immortal for he does not care about appreciation or denunciation nor concealing anything.
This tendencies of man towards desire and ambition damages the management of society. However, the solution to this problem is understanding that Satisfaction is ultimate happiness. We should realize our boundaries. The boundaries of our duty, of our pursuits, and of our situations. We must understand these boundaries and learn to live inside them. One, who realizes his limits, is really the happiest man. One, whose dissatisfaction continues to increase, will ultimately die under the pressure and constant fear of achieving the unachievable. This way of satisfaction is the practice of contentment. This absence of desires and ambition is contentment. The starting point of satisfaction is the end of desires. It is through practice, one can win over desires. Whenever there is a wave of desire, pacify it but do not answer it. If we react to the wave of desire, we will end up answering it. If we ignore it, will not get any response from us and gradually it starts subsiding. This rejection is lack of desire and this should be our effort.
